Reading Practice Intensive - Reading is Core to Learning

What did I learn that increased my understanding of the kaupapa and pedagogy of the Manaiakalani Reading Programme ? Digging deeper when reading. Areas to support student motivation to read. It is important to role model reading. Sharing ideas and information is a foundation to learning.
What did I learn that could improve my capability and confidence in teaching reading? I have learnt a bit on how to support the passion for reading with students and myself. There is a lot of information I need to know to better my reading program. Learning and seeing other kaiako experiences and ideas was very revealing in terms of my own teaching reading practice.
What did I learn that could be used with my learners? Learning and knowing the PILLARS OF READING will help me work with my students to enhance the reading program. I especially appreciated the Kākāpō Week 3 Task Board example. This one slide had many ways to use reading for learning, or, learning for reading.
What did I learn that could be shared within my wider community, with either colleagues, or whānau/aiga? Thetore is not a lot of different genre written in Te Reo Māori, but we are tapping into areas that do strongly support Te Reo. There is also not much on the different kaupapa that our tamariki can relate too in Te Reo Māori. Kaiako are left to create their own reo resources. Media, social media are in Te Reo Māori, but not all interests are available.

  1. Kia ora Lucy, It was so wonderful to meet you today. I really appreciated your thoughts as we meet in our breakout group. Your reflection on today is enlightening. I am glad that you have found some of the resources helpful for you. It is always good to see how someone else does things to help you think about your own practise. I know that you have a challenging space in terms of wide range of texts, and what a burden for your kaiako having to make everything from scratch. I hope this course allows you to find things you can share with your colleagues.
    Ngā mihi nui

  3. Kia ora Whaea Lucy,
Great to read you are finding so many ways to teach that resonate with you. I agree, seeing examples of what others do and having the time to look at these in detail is a great gift.
    Ngā mihi,
    Maria
